CLINICS
Phlebotomy
Services
We have fully trained staff who take blood
samples between 8.30 and 10.00am Monday to Wednesday.
Infant
And Baby (Child Development) Clinic
This is held every
Friday between 1.30 and 3.00pm. It is run by the health visitor and practice nurses
in conjunction with the doctor. The health visitor will be pleased to see you
to discuss any problems related to childcare.
The practice nurses will
be there to give routine immunisation to the baby, to offer help and advice on
accident prevention and loan equipment.
The practice nurse will also be
able to offer family planning help and advice as well as advice on your wellbeing.
Childhood Immunisations
It is important that children
are fully immunised and, thanks to immunisation, illnesses such as measles, mumps,
rubella, diphtheria, tetanus and polio are now rare. Whooping cough is a distressing
illness and is also preventable. HIB and meningitis C immunisation protects against
two forms of meningitis in childhood. The practice strongly encourages parents and guardians to have their children vaccinated.
Well
Woman Clinic
This clinic is run by one of our female
doctors and the practice nurse each Tuesday between 1.00 and 4.30pm. However,
we try to accommodate smears and contraception convenient to the patient over
and above this clinic.
We are very proud of our well woman clinic and aim to provide a relaxed atmosphere
giving every woman who attends quality time with the nurse.
Cervical Smears
These
are recommended every three to five years (or as otherwise advised) from the age
of 25 until the age of 65. They are always carried out either by one of the female
doctors or by a qualified nurse. You will normally receive a letter informing
you that your smear is due - please ring the surgery to make an appointment.
Breast Examination
Advice
The practice nurse is there to offer advice on breast self-examination, but if you are concerned about any changes a GP appointment will be required.
Contraception
We offer a full contraception service
including the contraceptive pill, Depo Provera injection, coils and Implanon (a
contraception implant that lasts for three years) and post-coital contraception
(“morning after” pill).
Diabetic
Clinic
This is run by Dr Perrins along with the practice
nurse and the dietician and is held every Tuesday from 8.15 to 10.30am. We aim
to offer a full assessment of your diabetes on a yearly basis. This clinic offers
you the opportunity to discuss all aspects of your condition.
Coronary
Heart Disease
We hold a clinic every Wednesday afternoon
led by our practice nurse. We aim to assess on a yearly basis.
Hypertensive
Clinic
High or low blood pressure is usually diagnosed
by the doctor and is monitored by the practice nurse.
Healthy
Lifestyle (Including Stop Smoking)
The practice is committed
to encouraging healthy living and all our practice nurses are fully trained to
offer advice on diet, lifestyle and offer a 'stop smoking' service.
Elderly Screening
If you
are aged 75 or over, you will be offered a health check every year by our practice
nurse unless you already attend other clinics regularly.
Health
Promotion
We are committed to reducing the number of
patients suffering from heart disease and strokes. It is important therefore that
we detect those most at risk. One way we can do this is to record blood pressure,
height, weight, alcohol and tobacco habits and family history of all our patients
between the ages of 16 and 74. If you have not seen a doctor for three years or
more, please make an appointment to see the nurse to have a health check.
Minor Surgery
We have
facilities for removing lumps and bumps and for the treatment of warts which would
normally be done at hospital. Please make a routine doctor's appointment first
for assessment. This is carried out by all doctors and when necessary assisted
by the practice nurse.
Travel Vaccinations
Our practice nurses are fully trained in all aspects of travel vaccinations
and will advise and administer the inoculations you may require for travel abroad.
It is best to seek advice at least six weeks before travelling. Please note that
there is a charge for some of these vaccinations and the accompanying certificate.
Flu/Pneumonia Vaccinations
In accordance with the Department of Health guidelines, we recommend an influenza
vaccination for patients with chronic heart, lung or kidney disease, diabetics
and patients over the age of 65. Please make an appointment to have this done
in October/November.
Pneumonia vaccinations may also be considered.
Counsellor/Personal
Adviser
The counsellor is there to offer short-term help
on problems such as bereavement, life crises etc and can refer on to other agencies
if appropriate. She works closely with the doctors and the mental health team.
This service can be accessed through a routine appointment with the GP.
Pharmacist
The pharmacist
works closely with the GPs in monitoring your medication. If you have any worries
regarding your medication you can make an appointment to see the pharmacist at
the surgery any Tuesday between the hours of 12.30 and 3.30pm.
Physiotherapist
If you feel you need to be seen by a physiotherapist the practice will supply you with the contact number in order to book an appointment direct. The physiotherapist will then contact you by phone and talk through your symptoms and either offer advice or give you an appointment.
